The Joint Committee on Constitution and Justice of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey met to discuss two separate petitions for the waiver of immunity related to CHP Mersin deputy Ali Mahir Basarir and IYI Party Kocaeli deputy Lütfü Türkkan.

In the Joint Committee, chaired by Yusuf Beyazıt, deputy of the AK Party Tokat, a joint committee was held regarding the allegations of “public insult and intentional injury” against IYI Party Kocaeli deputy Lütfü Türkkan, and “insulting of a government official for his duty and attempt to influence a fair trial” against CHP Mersin deputy Ali Mahir Basarir. The Chairman of the Constitutional Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and the Chairman of the Joint Committee of the Judicial Commissions Yusuf Beyazıt said: “As the first stage of the Joint Commission, at today’s meeting, we will promote the establishment of a 5-person preparatory committee to examine the immunity files in detail under the statutes.” said.

Beyazıt stated that the preparatory committee will examine the immunity files in the next stage and submit its report to the Joint Committee within 1 month, saying: “As the Mixed Committee, we will make necessary evaluations of the preparatory committee report and the present the issue to the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, which is the final decision-maker,” he said.

Reviewing parliamentary immunity before starting discussions on the Basarir and Turkkan files, Beyazıt stated that the purpose of parliamentary immunity in the context of the historical development of the anayasa and parliamentary law is to protect the deputies against arbitrary and baseless criminal investigations and prosecutions and arrests.
