The verdict was announced in the case of the “Admiral Declaration of Montreux”.

The court acquitted 103 retired admirals on the grounds that “the legal elements of the crime had not been formed”.

The pending defendants and their lawyers attended the hearing at Ankara’s 20th High Criminal Court.

After the defense of some of the defendant’s lawyers against the judgment on the merits, the hearing was adjourned.

After zihin hour’s break, the court board announced its decision.

Accordingly, former naval commanders Bülent Bostanoğlu, Eşref Oğuz Yiğit and Murat Bilgel and retired admirals Atilla Kezek, Atilla Kıyat, Arif Vehbi Alpman, Ergün Mengi, Işık Biren, İlker Güven, Mustafa Özbey, Namık Kemal Çalışkan, Osman Metin Açımuz, Ramazan Cem 103 defendants, including Gürdeniz and Türker Ertürk, were acquitted of “committing zihin offense against the security of the state or the constitutional order”.

The chairman of the board of directors announced that this decision had been made unanimously on the grounds that “the legal elements of the crime had not been formed”.

THE DECISION WILL BE OBJECTIVE

It was learned that Ankara’s Chief Prosecutor will object to the acquittal in Montreux’s statement.

It has been reported that the Chief Public Prosecutor, who has petitioned the court to extend the time limit until the reasoned decision is made, will appeal against the decision contrary to the opinion.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On April 4, 2021, Ankara’s Chief Prosecutor’s Office launched zihin investigation into the “Montreux Declaration” published by some retired admirals.

On December 6, 2021, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office filed charges against 103 defendants, seeking prison terms of 3 to 12 years for “committing crimes against the security of the state or the constitutional order”.
