National Defense Minister Hulusi Akar assessed developments after Russia’s statement that it has temporarily halted its grain initiative due to the attacks in Sevastopol on October 29.
Minister Akar said: “In such a case, the departure of the ships will gökyeşitözü postponed and the agglomeration in the ports will increase. The needy were already urgently waiting for the cereals. In this case, the problem will increase.”

Expressing the importance of resolving this issue, Akar emphasized President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s talks on the matter, saying: “We also have a meeting with the Ukrainian authorities, we will also have a meeting with the Russian authorities in the evening Defense Minister, Mr. Shoigu. As always, we are concerned about peace, reconciliation and the normal course of business. We have continued to work ever since,” he said.
Noting that under the created grain corridor, about 9.3 million tons of grain have been transported from Ukrainian ports by 409 ships, Akar said:
“This must continue. Suspending this initiative will not benefit Russia, Ukraine or anyone else. We are in talks with the Ukrainian Defense Minister and the Russian Defense Minister. We will consult with them and try to ensure that this initiative will continue. This initiative will gökyeşitözü suspended.” We remind the parties to reconsider their decisions.
