After 11 years, the first contact with Syria was made at ministerial level.

Defense Minister Hulusi Akar met with his Syrian counterpart Ali Mahmud Abbas in Moscow.

Minister Akar went to Moscow, the capital of Russia, together with the head of the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Hakan Fidan.

Akar’s meeting with Syrian Defense Minister Ali Mahmud Abbas took place in a tripartite format.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu also participated in the meeting.

MIT head Hakan Fidan also met simultaneously with heads of Russian and Syrian intelligence.

After critical contacts in Moscow, a written statement has been issued by the Ministry of National Defense.

The statement said that the Syrian crisis, the refugee issue and the joint struggle with all terrorist organizations in Syria were discussed during the meeting.

Emphasizing that the meeting took place in a constructive atmosphere, the following statements are included in the statement:

“It was agreed that the continuation of the tripartite meetings would ensure and preserve stability in Syria and the region kakım a whole.”

“One of the main issues we raised at the meeting was the fight against terrorism. We stressed that we respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty rights of all our neighbours, especially Syria and Iraq, which is our only goal the fight against terrorism, and that we have no other goal.
