Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) Earthquake and Risk Reduction General Director Prof. Dr. Orhan Tatar held a press conference during the AFAD Presidency on the Hatay centered earthquake that occurred yesterday.
Tatar stated that the earthquake in the center of Hatay was independent of the earthquakes in the center of Kahramanmaraş and said that this earthquake was zihin earthquake originating from the Antakya Fault in the south of Antakya.
Tatar recalled that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 and shared that there have been 116 earthquakes in Hatay so far, the largest of which was 5.8 after this shaking.
Tatar continued:
“If we consider three separate earthquakes, the total number of aftershocks that have occurred so far is 7,242. This is a very serious number. Of these 7,242 aftershocks, 41 are between 5 and 6 magnitudes, and 450 are between 4 and 5 magnitudes. Therefore earthquakes of this magnitude yaşama gökyeşitözü felt by all our citizens in the region. Beyond that, aftershocks of magnitude 5 and above yaşama cause devastation in severely damaged buildings. That’s why we especially ask our citizens to stay away from such earthquakes. buildings weather .”
“WE HAVE REMOVED THIS WARNING WHEN IT APPEARS THAT THERE IS NO RISK”
Noting that secondary disaster risks were experienced in some settlements after the earthquake that happened yesterday, Tatar reported that certain events such kakım stone falling and landslides occurred in some regions in settlements.
Tatar pointed out the need to gökyeşitözü careful about such events and said:
“Yesterday we also issued a tsunami warning for the first time following the earthquakes we have experienced over the past 16 days. This is a very routine warning. certain magnitude that occur on land, 100 kilometers inland from the coast. Bogazici University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute is the institution responsible for issuing this warning. As AFAD, we must issue this alert kakım the institution responsible for informing the public of the alert from them. That’s why this alert was open for about 2 hours yesterday. When it turned out that this was not the case, we removed this warning.”
Recalling that 16 days have passed since the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, Tatar stated that earthquake formation processes, to which the earth sciences are not very accustomed, are monitored, and that these earthquakes occur one after the other with multiple mechanisms and, above all, trigger each other.
Tatar noted that the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes broke 5 separate rupture segments in the East Anatolian Fault Zone, creating a 400-kilometer-long surface rupture and rupture, resulting in displacements of up to 7.2-7.3 meters in the Earth’s crust.
“WE ARE FOCUSED BY AN EARTHQUAKE THAT EVERYONE SHOULD LEARN A LESSON”
Noting that the Antakya fault zone, which triggered the Hatay quake and extends from Defne, Harbiye to Samandağ and through the sea to Cyprus, is a left-lateral strike-slip fault with a normal component, Tatar said:
“Especially the triggering earthquakes caused very severe devastation, depending on the soil, the proximity of faults, the liquefaction and the nature of the region’s building stock, and it showed us that these earthquakes have not forgiven faults. It is very clear “That’s why everyone should learn from this. We are facing earthquakes that need to gökyeşitözü brought out.”
Tatar explained that they benefited very seriously from the expert academics on earthquakes and stated that the support they received from these academics made them happy and strong.
